Your Local Expert: New York Folklore Society presents Petro Dzyuba - Come to the market for an early Easter celebration and join us for a demonstration of traditional Russian Easter (Pascha) egg decorating customs. Petro is a master of Iconography and has studied all over the world. His studio is now based in Troy, NY.
Special Event: The Mop & Bucket Company will present a Spontaneous Broadway Sneak Preview at 1:00

Schenectady County Bicentennial Events at the Market

 

Bicentennial Event Table: Come to the tables near the ticket windows at Proctors, and see all that the Schenectady County Historical  Society and the Mabee Farm have to offer during this Bicentennial Year.  Each month of the year includes  special programs.  Pat Barrot will be present from 10 - 2 o'clock to answer questions about the exhibit of  information that she and SCHS curator Kate Weller have created for us. 

 

Special Event: Schenectady County Historical Society and Mabee Farm presents Circuit Spinsters. The Circuit Spinsters will bring their spinning wheels and wool, and create yarn before our eyes. Children will be allowed to help make the yarn. The Spinsters love to travel to fairs and events, and gossip as they spin.

Crop Hunger Walks are ecumenical, interfaith, community events.  Undesignated funds help support the worldwide programs of Church World Service.  In partnership, CWS supports self-help development, meets emergency needs, and helps address the root causes of poverty and powerlessness.  25% of the dollars raised by local walkers will be returned to our community to support programs that provide food to needy individuals.

 

Schenectady County Bicentennial Events at the Market

 

Special Event: "From Sheep to Shawl." Pam Bucci, will bring wool sheared from her sheep, card it, spin it, knit it, and display knitted articles of clothing.

 

Schenectada Round Table: "Henry Hudson was Right After All", a round-table discussion led by Alan Cross, who will explain the China trade that was happening in the New York region soon after Hudson's voyage and on into the  present. Alan Cross is a true student of local history - and is fascinated by and full of information about the interchange between New York State and China since the time of Henry Hudson's voyage in the Half Moon. Come to the table by the window in the Muddy Cup at noon, and enjoy learning little known facts about our area. "Henry Hudson was Right After All" is the topic of the day for this round-table discussion.

Celebrate Schenectady County's Bicentennial!

Education Center Jam Session: Lisa Russo. Instruments for young children. Lots of interactive songs and movement.  Lisa Russo is a local children's musician. With guitar in hand and lots of hands-on instruments for children to use, Lisa will engage the youngest of children in a fun-filled musical adventure.
Your Local Expert: John Mishanec of Cornell Cooperative Extension John works with commercial vegetable growers, covering half the state.  He helps vegetable growers reduce or eliminate pesticides and increase profitability.  Along with Schenectady County Cornell Cooperative Extension Master Gardeners, he will be doing soil tests and advising on techniques home gardeners can employ to reduce insect and disease pest problems in the garden.
If you would like a soil test, take 4-6 samples of soil from your garden.  Soil should be taken from the root zone, 3-4 inches below the soil surface.  Mix the samples together and allow the soil to dry.  Then bring about a cups worth of soil for the actual sample.  Only about a tablespoon of soil is actually used in the soil test.
Children's Activities: ECOS, the Environmental Clearinghouse of Schenectady will host the children's activities for a special Earth Day Celebration!

Special Event: "The Onrust," a Round-table and slide presentation by Don Rittner, Schenectady County and City Historian. His schooner is expected to take part in the flotilla celebrating the Hudson Quadricentennial and the local volunteers who helped build the boat over the last year and a half.

Special Opening Day Events

 

11:00 Ribbon Cutting: Mayor Stratton will join Schenectady Greenmarket as we cut the ribbon to celebrate the opening of our first summer market. Please join us for this special occasion.

 

11:15 and 12:45: Welcome Summer! Pokingbrook Morris Dancers will help us celebrate the coming of May and the opening of the outdoor market. Pokingbrook Morris Dancers have been performing traditional English morris dances since 1974. The Cotswold dances that will be shown at Schenectady Greenmarket are typical of those springtime displays that historically served to celebrate the awakening of the Earth and to earn a few pennies for the dancers.

Celebrate Schenectady County's Bicentennial!

Your Local Expert: Beverley Cornelius works with reed, black ash, and sweet grass to form baskets in the Shaker and the Native American traditions.  A native of Schenectady county, she began learning to make baskets 12 years ago, and has studied with teachers all over the world. 
Basket making was an important skill during the early 1800s in Schenectady County :  Baskets were used as containers for food and other storage, for agricultural work.  Native Americans made "burden baskets," and carriers of various sorts, including those for carrying a papoose!
