Schenectady Greenmarket Part-Time Market Assistant
Job Description
Schenectady Greenmarket is looking for a part-time market assistant (PTMA). The PTMA will report to the Vice Chair of the market, and can expect to work for 10 to 20 hours per week, on average, at the rate of $15/hour. It is expected that these duties of the PTMA will be adjusted over time, based on the needs of the Market. A partial list of initial duties includes:
Operations:
- Market management: manage the market approximately once per month including setup of the market (picnic tables, banners, tents, etc.), meeting with vendors, making judgment calls on market issues, and coordinating volunteers and assistant managers
- Prepare weekly market report: count tokens; calculate attendance; balance accounting of weekly cash and credit transactions; report to board and to individual board members as necessary to address market issues
- Banking: write checks for weekly vendor reimbursement
- Volunteer scheduling: schedule and track market volunteers
- Equipment maintenance: regularly inspect and as necessary repair, have serviced, or replace equipment
Promotions:
- Email vendors weekly: request weekly product list, specials, etc.
- Create weekly promotional report: compile lists from vendors, community programming, community access, occasional vendors and promotional messaging
- Email report: maintain database and send out customized reports to DSIC, Chamber All Over Albany, local media, City of Schenectady, board, etc.
- Post report online: facebook, website, etc.
- Enewsletter: maintain Constant Contact database, create biweekly newsletter, schedule/send
Vendor Relations:
- Track permits and insurance: Maintain spreadsheet and files; follow up with vendors as necessary.
- Schedule backup vendors: assign wait list vendors a slot when weekly vendors cannot attend.
- Answer market phone: Check market phone during the week.
Community Access:
- Maintain documents for Farmers Market Nutrition Programs: join FMNP program in the spring, encourage appropriate vendors to enroll; prepare reports for NY State Department of Agriculture and Markets
- Maintain token logs and prepare reports: prepare token reimbursement logs for use at market; prepare monthly reports for Farmers Market Federation
Additionally, the PTMA will be a nonvoting member of the Vendor Relations, Operations, and Promotions committees. The PTMA may work on organizational and promotional tasks related to infrequent events such as fundraisers, membership drives, transfer of equipment between market locations, and other intermittent tasks.
Qualified candidates should be familiar with spreadsheets and word processing software, be facile with e-mail, and be able to lift at least 50 pounds. Candidates should also have an uplifting, flexible and friendly personality and be able to work well in a team environment
